George Clooney “addicted to flying” in new film

December 29, 2008

I don’t know if George Clooney will actually join the mile high club in this movie, but I definitely want to see it:

George Clooney is to star in a new romantic comedy about a man addicted to flying.

The Hollywood hunk will play Ryan Bingham, a frequent flier, whose life is falling apart so he takes solace travelling in what he calls Airworld and puts all his effort towards one goal – collecting a million frequent flier miles.

Up In The Air will be directed by Juno’s Jason Reitman, and is based on the book by Walter Kirn, Empire magazine reports.

George’s character, a career transition counsellor, gets into a relationship with a businesswoman – played by The Departed star Vera Farmiga – and they meet in hotel rooms as they travel around.

Anna Kendrick reportedly beat Juno star Ellen Page in auditions to play the other leading lady, a young woman who is always crossing paths with Bingham.

Filming is due to begin in February in Miami, Las Vegas and St Louis.

Flight-themed Fly Lounge in Washington, DC

December 24, 2008

I just discovered the bar Fly Lounge in Washington, DC via Metromix. Sounds great! In The Mile High Club, the authors don’t get into so much the fetishization of airplanes and pilots 9though they do of flight attendants a bit), but that’s another interesting aspect, about those who love flying and being around flying culture. They’re also opening one in Aspen; next time I’m in DC I will check this place out!

Join the mile high club

Inside Look at Fly: An exclusive aviation themed lounge Join the mile high club Join the mile high club Join the mile high club

To an extent, Dupont Circle’s Fly Lounge is a lot like the act of joining the real mile high club. It is undeniably sexy, steamy and accessible only to a lucky few who get the casual nod. Despite all the hype, the real thing’s probably a bit more cramped than you had anticipated.

Since its debut in 2006, Fly has generated a lot of buzz as one of the most unique and exclusive clubs in the District. Founded by a local DJ-turned-pilot, the lounge is fully immersed in a sleek aviation theme. Fly’s interior is modeled after the cylindrical cabin of a hyper-classy private jet. Beautiful waitresses navigate the crowd in skimpy stewardess uniforms, complete with short skirts, neck scarves and bosom-hugging button-downs with winged lapel pins. Small LCD screens line the walls, displaying lucid images of passing clouds. Tables are even stocked with miniature packs of mixed nuts to complete the feel.

For such a small space (capacity is capped at 120), Fly packs in a surprising amount of energy. The venue’s impressively powerful sound system pulsates an eclectic mix of danceable music, facilitating a kinetic vibe. The DJ spins an engaging blend of house-infused rock, 80s pop, funk and hip-hop, promising to get even the most timid clubbers on the dance floor. Just try standing still when you hear Johnny Cash successfully transition into Kanye. Not possible.

Sienna Miller and Rhys Ifans joined The Mile High Club

December 18, 2008

This is from February but still interesting, via Scanner:

The pair’s antics reached an eyepopping climax – at 37,000ft – with Rhys whipping off his top and jumping half-naked into giggling Sienna’s fold-out SINGLE bed.

Their award-winning transatlantic performance (in the horror category) started from the moment we’d buckled into our Upper Class seats for the 7.30pm Virgin flight on Monday.

Oblivious to all fellow passengers – including Oscar-less James McAvoy, who was buried in his sudoku book – Sienna and Rhys began snogging, tongues a go-go. Imagine a soundtrack of slurping and squelching.

Next came an interlude of hairstroking, petting and nibbling, interspersed with whispering to each other and laughing hysterically.

After slipping into baggy black sleep suits they then treated us to some play-fighting. After a while, Sienna demanded: “Baby, baby, can you go to the bar and get me some white wine.” Rhys nodded, collected two generous glasses of Pinot Grigio, and managed to spill one down himself. Classy.

And just as we thought things couldn’t get any more stomach-churning, came a sight we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemies.

Rhys pulled off his wine-soaked top, exposing his scrawny white body, and squeezed into Sienna’s bed for a snuggle. As it’s only 33ins wide, that’s some squeeze.

Fleshbot’s got the Top 10 Mile High Club videos

December 17, 2008

Needless to say, it’s XXX site Fleshbot, so it’s NOT safe for work (NSFW):

Air travel has gotten a lot less sexy over the years: the stewardesses flight attendants no longer dress like cocktail waitresses, the quarters have gotten way more cramped … and don’t even get us started on the price of alcohol. Yet somehow we’re still turned on by the thought of doing it on a plane. Is it the danger of doing it in public? The thrill of cramped quarters? The aphrodisiac qualities of those teeny-tiny bags of pretzels?

9 percent of people have had sex on a commercial airliner!

December 15, 2008

from Budget Travel, quoting from the book Airline Confidential: Lifting the Lid on the Airline Industry (which has a blog):

A recent survey found that around 9 percent of people admitted to having has sex on board a commercial airliner. The respondents were evenly split between men and women, perhaps indicating that the traditional wisdom that men tend to brag and women tend to be modest when asked questions about sex may be fading. Before you start checking around you on your next flight to see if close to one in ten people are at it, don’t forget that only means that they may have done it on one occasion, not every time they fly!

What is it that makes talk of sexual exploits on board aircraft so fascinating? It’s possibly linked to the whole romance that used to be associated with flying. In the days when aircraft actually had proper bunk beds, and when air travel was the preserve of the very rich and the very famous; back then passengers were probably both. These days with air travel being more akin to getting on and off a bus the romance has very definitely gone out of flying.

Another aspect of the whole sex and travel routine is the single guy, and particularly the businessman who somehow thinks that every air stewardess, flight attendant, trolley dolly, call them what you like, is going to be instantly attracted to them. Watching lonely business travelers chatting up flight attendants is still one of the saddest sights to behold. New research shows that air stewardesses are facing increasing levels of harassment. Even the British Medical Journal has got in on the act claiming that passengers have pestered one in five stewardesses. The research was undertaken among 2,000 stewardesses who worked between 1965 and 1995 for Alitalia, the Italian airline.

Sex on Led Zeppelin’s Starship

December 11, 2008

Found this fascinating piece on Led Zeppelin and The Starship in The New York Times:

”If you were operating at the top echelon of the record business, you had to have the Starship,” says the legendary rock photographer Neal Preston, who held an all-access boarding pass for Led Zeppelin’s tours. ”It was the Bolivian diamond flake of airplanes.”

These days, as Led Zeppelin takes off again with the release of its chart-topping, three-CD live set, ”How the West Was Won,” the unapologetic excess of the band’s Starship days has become cool all over again. The plane also gets plenty of air time in ”According to the Rolling Stones” (Chronicle), a new book with rare photos that show Mick, Keith and company lounging aboard the Starship in all their louche decadence. And designers like Dsquared are referencing 70’s style rock ‘n’ roll jet-set glamour on the catwalk.

There had been, of course, other private planes. The Rolling Stones chartered one for their 1972 tour, inviting Truman Capote and Lee Radziwill to tag along. And much has been made of the plush jets the wrinkly rockers leased for their recent world tour. But they are crop dusters compared to the Starship.

”It was very luxurious,” says Peter Frampton, who leased the jet after the mid-70’s success of ”Frampton Comes Alive!” ”It was the closest thing to Air Force One.” In some respects it was even better, boasting a shag-carpeted lounge with swiveling leather chairs, a pair of sexy stewardesses named Suzee and Bianca and a brass-covered bar with a built-in organ, should the muse strike.

”It was all about fighting for a seat at the bar,” Frampton says. For the members of Deep Purple and their roadies, it was more about watching X-rated movies on the high-tech video monitor and using the Starship to entice groupies. ”The girls would get on the plane and fly to wherever the next show was,” recalls Bruce Payne, the group’s manager. ”Fathers two states over were calling the cops.” But Deep Purple’s drummer, Ian Paice, has no regrets. ”The Starship was a great place to join the mile-high club,” he says.

Though the plane often resembled a jet-propelled Sodom and Gomorrah, its roots were rather innocent: the Starship was owned by the teen idol Bobby Sherman and his manager, Ward Sylvester, a former producer for the Monkees. Frustrated with traveling to gigs on cramped charter flights, the two men decided to purchase a plane and lease it to like-minded stars. Eventually, they bought the Boeing jet for $600,000 from United Airlines, which was phasing out the model.

What they received was a standard, 138-seat passenger plane — until, that is, Sylvester took it to a custom shop in Oakland, Calif., and spent another $200,000 on remodeling. A sea of maroon shag was installed, as was a film library that included everything from the Marx Brothers to ”Deep Throat.” Asked whether the waterbed in the master suite was in accordance with F.A.A. regulations, Sylvester pauses. ”There was a placard saying the bed couldn’t be occupied during takeoff or landing,” he says.

How Dr. Susan Block joined The Mile High Club

December 5, 2008

Prolific sex writer Dr. Susan Block details her adventures in The Mile High Club on her website:

Max and I met the challenge when we first joined the Mile High Club on one of those long, lazy, midweek afternoon, half-empty flights from Philly to LA. It started when I was just taking an innocent little nap, my head nestled in Max’s nice warm lap and, since it was daytime, I put a blanket over my head to block out the light. So, in between snoozes, I would sleepily snuggle and rub my cheek against Max’s jeans around his rather responsive crotch area. Then, keeping the blanket pulled down over my head, I proceeded to drowsily yet deliberately unzip his fly, and go down, down, down on him as we kept going up, up, up in the air. It was quite exhilarating for the first 10 minutes or so. Then I started getting pieces of yucky, mood-breaking airline blanket in my mouth, and I think the elderly couple across the aisle were wondering if Max had a small, flight sick animal on his lap or what. So I pulled up his pants and emerged from the blanket, a little soggy and bleary-eyed, but determined to finish what we started.

There was nowhere to go but the infamous airplane lavatory, which is very small, but just big enough. And though it does say “No Smoking,” nowhere does it say “No Sex.” So let’s see, how did we do it? Max was sitting on the toilet seat. I was in the woman superior position (of course), though I didn’t exactly feel superior. More like a crushed bird with my feet pressed up against the sides of the stall, as my nether parts gamely tried to catch the worm.

She also shares why sex on a plane is hot, including romance, danger, excitement, boredom, risk of discovery and:

Then there’s the seductive siren of anonymity. You’re away from your family, your nosy neighbors, your competitive co-workers, the folks who care about you and would probably call you a slut or a nut if they only knew. Traveling makes it easy to be wild. It is well known to cause otherwise conservative people to commit all sorts of spontaneous, risky acts they would not try at home, such as indulging in crazed, passionate whoopy in a public place.

It was some of the most uncomfortable and ridiculous sex we’ve ever had, but it was also some of the greatest. An achievement, you might say. We even both managed to climax before the inevitable turbulence occurred, which actually felt kind of nice–a little rock n roll rhythm to the afterglow–at which point the flight attendant started banging on the door .
